What makes an acting performance so remarkable and/or memorable? Continue reading 20 / 2020 – The 20 Best Movie Performances of 2020 →

  • Careful What You Wish For, 2015 - ★★
Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum's generically titled 'Careful What You Wish For' is a painfully average erotic thriller that's light on eroticism and even lighter on thrills. The movie wallows in the genre's tropes without escalating them beyond the familiar. The lack of originality and effort ultimately sinks the picture, but not before the reveal of an […]
  • Happy Old Year, 2019 - ★★★★
Nawapol Thamrongrattanarit's 'Happy Old Year' sparks joy by embracing the melancholy of its story. Thamrongrattanarit uses the metaphor of Marie Kondo's KonMari method as an analogy of a concise psychological portrait where self-discovery, the confrontation of the past, as well as letting go of the burden that tormenting memories become necessary tasks to start over […]
  • Followed, 2018 - ★★½
Antonie Le's feature film debut, 'Followed,' is definitely not the worst horror nor found footage film, although it's also very far from the best. It has a lot of great tension and some of the scenes are genuinely creepy. Unfortunately, the story and plot are a convoluted mess that never quite comes together enough by […]
  • Affliction, 2021 - ★★½
Teddy Soeriaatmadja's first stab at horror relies on atmosphere and suspense rather than gore and jump-scares. Unfortunately, 'Affliction' ends up totally bland. The plot is pretty straightforward but the tone of the film is all over the place; there are moments where you really aren't sure if you're supposed to feel emotional or scared – […]
  • Yang Tak Tergantikan, 2021 - ★★★
A companion piece to Herwin Novianto's Disney+ Hotstar previously-released 'Sejuta Sayang Untuknya.' 'Yang tak Tergantikan' is your quintessential big screen family drama that teeters on cliché every now and then and with some story threads are wrapped up too quickly. But, with an ensemble this strong, the movie sparks a winning connection to the characters, […]
  • The Heartbreak Club, 2021 - ★★½
'Sobat Ambyar' doesn't quite reach the potentials that it strives to and struggles to fully engage due to its monotonous approach in some paper-thin plotting. If nothing else, the movie is a great, sweet tribute to Didi Kempot’s glorious songs for the broken hearts.amiratthemovies.com/2021/01/17/review-sobat-ambyar-2021/Netflix (USA).
  • Summerland, 2020 - ★★★★
There's a great deal of sentimentality lies in 'Summerland,' with swelling music and soft focus flashbacks, which often threatens to overwhelm the actors. Writer/director Jessica Swale communicates the pain of living as an outsider in a deeply prejudiced society without being preachy or distracting other parts of the story. It elevates the film from a […]
