Banyak catatan menarik dari pengumuman nominasi The 92^nd Annual Academy Awards. Joker (Todd Phillips, 2019) berhasil melampaui ekspektasi banyak pihak dengan raihan sebelas nominasi termasuk di kategori Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor in a Leading Role untuk penampilan prima Joaquin Phoenix, dan Best Adapted Screenplay untuk naskah cerita yang ditulis Phillips bersama dengan Scott Silver. Raihan sebelas nominasi tersebut juga tidak hanya menjadikan Joker sebagai film peraih nominasi terbanyak di ajang penghargaan Academy Awards kali ini namun juga menjadikannya sebagai film hasil adaptasi komik tersukses di sepanjang sejarah pelaksanaan ajang penghargaan insan film paling prestisius di Amerika Serikat (dunia?) tersebut. Kesuksesan Joker diikuti oleh 1917 (Sam Mendes, 2019), The Irishman (Martin Scorsese, 2019), dan Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood (Quentin Tarantino, 2019) yang sama-sama meraih sepuluh nominasi. Ketiga film tersebut juga akan bersaing bersama dengan Joker serta Ford v Ferrari (James Mangold, 2019), Jojo Rabbit (Taika Waititi, 2019), Little Women (Greta Gerwig, 2019), Marriage Story (Noah Baumbach, 2019), dan Parasite (Bong Joon-ho, 2019) untuk memperebutkan gelar Best Picture.

Kesuksesan Parasite – yang berhasil meraih enam nominasi – juga membawa nama Korea Selatan untuk pertama kalinya mampu mendapatkan nominasi di kategori Best International Feature Film. Saingan Parasite di kategori tersebut, Honeyland (Tamara Kotevska, Ljubomir Stefanov, 2019), juga sukses membawa nama negara Makedonia Utara untuk mendapatkan nominasi pertama mereka. Hebatnya lagi, sebagai sebuah dokumenter, Honeyland menjadi film dokumenter pertama yang mendapatkan nominasi di kategori Best International Feature Film. Honeyland sendiri juga mendapatkan satu tambahan nominasi di kategori Best Documentary Feature. Berbicara tentang “pertama kali,” Scarlett Johansson kali ini berhasil mendapatkan nominasi Academy Awards pertamanya. Tidak tanggung-tanggung, Johansson mampu meraih dua nominasi sekaligus – satu nominasi di kategori Best Actress in a Leading Role untuk penampilannya di Marriage Story dan sebuah nominasi di kategori Best Actress in a Supporting Role untuk penampilannya di Jojo Rabbit. Menyusul Mary J. Blige dan Lady Gaga yang sebelumnya mendapatkan nominasi di kategori akting dan penulisan lagu di tahun yang sama, Cynthia Errivo mengulang kembali catatan tersebut berkat penampilan dan tulisan lagunya untuk Harriett (Kasi Lemmons, 2019).

Secara keseluruhan, 53 judul film berhasil mendapatkan 124 nominasi.
